2012-2013 JLC Community Projects

Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) - Summer Concentration

  • Financial Support: $9,500
  • 25 -35 Volunteers
  • Volunteer Times:
    • Friday evening in June, July and August packing boxes for distribution at LCFB
    • Saturday morning in June, July and August distributing packed boxes at sites in the Charleston Metro Area as determined by LCFB
    • Any scheduled meetings set up by the JLC Project Chair
  • Project Description
    • This is a continuation of an existing project, where volunteers pack food boxes on Friday evenings at the LCFB and distribute them off-site to low-income families in the Charleston Metro Area on Saturday mornings.  This is project is accomplished in three summer mass food distributions.  Approximately 40,000 pounds of food will be packed to serve 900 families in low-income communities in the tri-county area.
    • To add to this successful program, we are including JLC assistance with the SNAP Program.  JLC members will be trained to use the on-site Benefit Bank Center to help those in need become pre-qualified for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
    • This highly successful project meets members’ demand for a summer concentration project and offers opportunities for partnerships with other projects.
    • This program feeds many families that are served by Backpack Buddies during the school year
  • What will the JLC Volunteers do?
    • The JLC Volunteers will pack boxes of food during the summer on Friday evenings and distribute them on Saturday mornings.
    • 2-3 JLC members will help pre-qualify people for the SNAP Program at packing sessions.

Lowcountry Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies

  • Financial Support: $19,000
  • 20-30 Volunteers
  • Volunteer Times:
    • One Saturday morning per month from August 2012 through May 2013
  • Project Description
    • This is a continuation of another very successful existing project, where volunteers pack backpacks during 9 monthly packing sessions.  Backpacks are given to children in need, who, when they leave school on Friday will receive enough vital nutrition until they return to school on Monday.   While the JLC is not the only local community group involved in the Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies program, the League is known locally as an important part of its success. 
  • What will the JLC Volunteers do?
    • Volunteers will pack food into the backpacks for the kids to take home on weekends.
    • During these packing sessions, volunteers would again help pre-qualify families to various programs available through SNAP.            

Farmers Market Concentration through Fields to Families

  • Financial Support: $2,300
  • 10-20 Volunteers
  • Volunteer Times:
    • This is a fall concentrated project.  Will run (roughly) from September through mid December.
  • Project Description
    • Fields to Families mission is to help increase nutrition to the area hungry by coordinating the distribution of fresh produce obtained from local gardens and farms.
  • What will the JL volunteers do?
    • Junior League of Charleston, Inc. volunteers will share information about the Fields to Families program with market visitors and will coordinate the collection and distribution of donated produce at the end of each market.


Florence Crittenton Homes of SC-Small Group Programs

  • Financial Support: $8,500
  • 25-30 Volunteers
  • Volunteer Times:
    • Determined by Committee Chair in coordination with the home administrators.
  • Project Description
    • Florence Crittenton fosters the development of healthy babies and strong, competent parents.  FCP has a 113 year history of assisting low-income, at-risk pregnant and parenting young women by providing them a safe haven, education, counseling, medical care and social support, so that they may become independent, successful adults. 
  • What will the JL volunteers do?
    • Plan and participate in organized activities with the resident’s each month.  Activities will include speakers, physical activities and activities to assist the residents with their futures.
    • JLC volunteers will provide a positive role model from within the community to help enhance the self-esteem and self-sufficiency of the residents so that hunger & homelessness will not be problems for them or their children.

Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Inc.

  • Financial Support: $4,800
  • 10-15 Volunteers
  • Volunteer Times:
    • Flexible dates & times to be determined by the committee
  • Project Description
    • This is a continuation of a current project.  Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Inc. provides aid to children removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect.  Children receive clothing, school uniforms and shoes as well as books, backpacks, school supplies, toiletries and diapers within 48 hours of entering the system.
  • What will JLC Volunteers do?
    • JL members will work at the clothing closet.  Volunteers will help sort and size donations that come in from the community.  Other activities such as straightening shelves, filling orders for the children and general organizational activities may be expected as well.
    • As may be needed, and as JLC volunteers are able, assist in the delivery of orders to various locations in the tri-county area such as DSS and HALOS.

Rural Missions

  • Financial Support: 4,900
  • 20-30 Volunteers
  • Volunteer Times:
    • Saturdays – as determined by the committee in conjunction with Rural Missions administrators
  • Project Description
    • It is the mission of Rural Missions to restore the foundation of our community – its families – by repairing the homes in which they live.  JLC’s objective is to expand the assistance and effectiveness of the Housing work Camp Program of Rural Missions to provide decent and safe homes for very low-income seniors and families with young children currently living in dilapidated and substandard homes.
  • What will JLC Volunteers do?
    • JLC volunteers will have opportunities to work on home repairs, gardening and assist families with a variety of needs.  All work is preformed under the guidance or direction of experienced staff or project volunteers from other island hunger or housing advocates or providers.
