Junior League of Charleston Holds Diaper Bank Drive – Collects 15,102 Donations

From Aug. 5 through Aug. 11, 2017, the Junior League of Charleston Diaper Bank hosted a kick-off diaper collection drive to collect diapers for Lowcountry families. On Saturday and Sunday alone, the Diaper Bank collected 9,209 diapers, and collected a total of 15,102 diapers throughout the week of the drive. The drive was only possible with the help of participating companies that volunteered as drop-off locations.

We thank the following businesses for being drop-off locations. With their generosity, the Junior League of Charleston (JLC) was able to collect diapers throughout the community.

JLC volunteers were on-site at the following Harris Teeter locations on Saturday, Aug. 5 and on Sunday, Aug. 6 collecting donations:
Store 28: 675 Folly Rd.
Store 363: 9500 Westcott Blvd.
Store 363: 9500 Westcott Blvd.
Store 87: 620 Long Point Blvd.
Store 365: 975 Savannah Hwy.

Other area businesses participated as drop-off locations during the diaper drive:
First Citizens Bank in all of their Charleston area branches
Learning Express at the Mt. Pleasant Town Center
Girly Girls Boutique offered 10% of the purchase of anyone who donated at 141 Red Bank Rd, Goose Creek
The Little Gym at their West Ashley and Mt. Pleasant locations
Vintage Coffee on 219 Simmons Street, Mt. Pleasant

“Although this is only the initial step in the Junior League of Charleston Diaper Bank’s development, these donations will make a big impact on the community. The Diaper Bank’s purpose is to address the financial burden for Lowcountry families and to inform the community about this tremendous need. We are so grateful for the donations and the community’s willingness to help,” said Alisa Brooks, president, Junior League of Charleston.

On November 9, the JLC is hosting a Diaper Bank Launch Celebration at Alhambra Hall, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., to fully launch and educate the community of this new initiative. This event is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased here.

For countless low-income families in South Carolina, it is a struggle to provide adequate necessities like diapers for their babies. The average cost of diapers alone is climbing to $1,250 or more a year.

The Junior League of Charleston Diaper Bank will collect, package and work with community partner organizations to distribute diapers to families in the Lowcountry.

Throughout the year, the JLC will continue to encourage schools and local businesses to host their own drives and increase awareness of the Diaper Bank and its mission throughout the Lowcountry.
